My name is Mike Warner, and I filed today (May 28th) as a Republican candidate for Douglas County District Attorney. I consider myself a centrist or moderate. I have nearly 30 years of prosecutorial experience as a state and federal prosecutor. I have collaborated with all state and federal law enforcement agencies and possess extensive jury trial experience. For more information, please visit my web site at mikewarnerforda.com.
Since 2021, the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office has faced significant problems. These include high employee turnover, poor relationships with law enforcement, courts, and victims, and a well-publicized disciplinary complaint involving the incumbent. Unnecessary drama, subpar trial outcomes, and questionable plea agreements have been prominent issues within the office. These ongoing problems result from the current District Attorney’s lack of prosecutorial experience. If elected, I will use my background as a prosecutor to restore the office’s integrity and professionalism. A major change is needed, best accomplished by someone with experience. Having lived in Douglas County for 34 years, I care about having a fair, effective, and efficient criminal justice system. I intend to serve as District Attorney for a single term. My primary goal will be to improve the office and restore it to responsible prosecution. I will provide experience, no drama, and be a law enforcement official, not a politician.
I have no political agenda, and I believe politics should not influence the functioning of the District Attorney’s Office. My job will be to impartially and uniformly enforce the law and protect the public. My campaign is based solely on my experience and desire to improve the office. I want to construct a well-functioning office that will extend into the future.
If the label “Republican” is surprising to some, please understand that I am running to ensure that all Douglas County citizens have the opportunity to choose the next district attorney. I believe an important elected official should represent the choice of all registered voters. Without an opposing party candidate, a percentage group of single-party voters in an August primary would choose the next district attorney. This constructively disenfranchises many county citizens. I trust voters will be well-informed in November and compare candidates’ relative strengths and experience regardless of party status. The decision to elect the next District Attorney will be based on a candidate’s ability to do the job and address current problems in the office. I believe there is a widespread, non-partisan desire to fix things in the office and move forward more productively than what exists now. The problems in the District Attorney’s Office extend far beyond political affiliations.
