Relationships with Law Enforcement

The District Attorney’s Office will work towards improving its relationships with law enforcement agencies, which will include better communication, cooperation, and case management. The office will no longer use impersonal declination letters to reject cases. Instead, I will personally review any case that is recommended for declination. The prosecutors will discuss cases with the submitting agency if they require further investigation. The office will work with the police to develop submissible cases.

Communication with Victims

The District Attorney’s Office will also improve its communication and cooperation with victims and the general public. The highest priority will be given to communication between victims and their families. Case resolutions will happen with the victim’s understanding and discussion.

Communication with District Court Judges

The office will also work towards improving its communication and cooperation with District Court judges. The county is lucky to have a competent, courtroom-experienced bench. Conflicts with courts hurt effective prosecution and downgrade the criminal justice system.

Hiring Experienced Prosecutors

The DA’s office will hire and maintain experienced prosecutors who can effectively and consistently work with law enforcement, defense counsel, judges, victims, and the public.

Improving Jury Trials

The office will work towards improving the performance and outcomes of jury trials.

Impartiality

The DA’s office will maintain a non-political stance that applies the law to everyone fairly and justly. Improving prosecutorial competence is necessary to ensure the most basic concerns of protecting people and property.

Support for Speciality Courts, Juvenile Justice and Victim-Witness Unit

The office will maintain and continue to support the successful Behavioral Court and Drug Court programs. We will remain open to the addition of additional restorative programs and will not oppose alternative outcome, reformation oriented initiatives. The office will also work to maintain a high level of performance in juvenile court matters and expand support and resources for victim-witness employees. A concerted effort to repair the fundamental prosecutorial competence of the District Attorney’s Office will not occur at the expense of the above programs.
